Proclamation

Purpose:

Proclamations and Certificates of Recognition are issued by the Office of the Mayor to provide an opportunity for the Mayor and City Commission to recognize exceptional events, groups or people. Proclamations and Certificates of Recognition are an official ceremonial document issued by the Mayor to commemorate a specific time (day, week or month) to raise awareness about an issue; celebrate community events; recognize heroic acts; or honor individuals or groups who have made outstanding contributions to the DeLand community.

Examples of Items that Proclamations/Certificates of Recognition are typically issued:  

  • To raise awareness about an issue that celebrate community events or affects City of DeLand residents.
  • To recognize current heroic or exceptional acts by an individual.
  • 100th Birthday’s 
  • Significant milestone anniversaries of business or organizations within the City of DeLand, who have made significant contributions to the community, beginning after 20 years and in 5-year increments thereafter.

Proclamations are typically not issued for:

  • Weddings and family reunions
  • Requests that are advertisements, commercial or political in nature, or promote one religion over others and will not be approved. 

Request Process:

  • We ask that requests to be read at a City Commission meeting be submitted at least fifteen (15) business days prior to the due date, along with the draft language.
  • If the request is to be read at an event, submissions need to be submitted ten (10) business days prior, however, more advance notice is suggested.  
  • All requests outside of this timeframe, will be issued at the discretion of the Mayor’s office, and will be mailed to the requestor.  
  • The Mayor has the discretion to issue a Certificate of Recognition or a courtesy letter in lieu of a proclamation.   
  • Any draft language submitted may be edited or revised without notice at the discretion of the Mayor’s Office.
  • As proclamations are within the discretion of the Mayor, some requests may not be granted.
