Fire/Rescue Training

The DeLand Fire Department is dedicated to ensuring our employees are adequately trained for all types of emergencies. Training is focused on Emergency Medical Services, Fireground Operations, Hazardous Materials Response, and Technical Rescue to name a few. Below is a breakdown of the initial and ongoing training conducted by members of the DeLand Fire Department.

Entry-level Firefighters

All firefighters must complete these requirements to become a certified firefighter:

  • 492 hours of firefighter training 
  • EMT Certification (110 classroom hours and at least 20 hours of supervised clinicals) OR Paramedic Certification (422 Classroom hours, 150 hours of lab, and 540 externship hours)

Annual Training Requirements

The following is completed by all active members of the DeLand Fire Department every year.

  • 192 hours of company-level training
  • 18 hours of training at a certified training facility
  • 12 hours of company officer training
  • 12 hours of driver training
  • 6 hours of hazardous materials training

In addition to this required training, members often seek out advanced training to better themselves as well as the agency.

Certified Fire Safety Inspectors:

  • 225 hours of initial training followed by 54 hours of continuing education every 4 years.

Certified Fire Service Instructors:

  • Instructor I- 45 hours of initial training, plus 45 hours of continuing education every 4 years
  • Instructor II- 90 hours of initial training, an associate’s degree plus, 45 hours of continuing education every 4 years
  • Instructor III- 124 hours of initial training, a bachelor’s degree, plus 70 hours of continuing education every 4 years. 

Live Fire Training Instructor:

  • 45 hours of initial training, plus 8 hours of continuing education every 4 years

New Driver Training:

  • New drivers will typically have over 200 hours of recorded training before being cleared to operate the Fire Department apparatus.

  • Trench/Excavation Rescue
  • Rope/High Angle Rescue
  • Confined Space Rescue
  • Vehicle and Machinery Rescue
  • Cell Tower Rescue
  • Building Collapse Rescue
  • Hazardous Materials Response
