Unlicensed Contracting

The City of Deland is currently waiving all permitting fees associated with the repair of damage resulting from Hurricane Milton. The fees for all other work shall remain in effect. Emergency repair work may begin prior to the issuance of a Building Permit, provided a permit is obtained within 48 hours of initiating said work. Please contact the Building Division at 386-626-7007 if you have any questions.

The provisions of Section 33-57 of the City's Code of Ordinances related tree removal and replacement have been temporarily suspended due to the current State of Emergency associated with Hurricane Milton. The removal of severely wind-damaged trees may be completed without the need for a permit or replacement. The removal of all other trees shall be subject to all provisions of Section 33-57. The public is cautioned to hire only Florida licensed contractors to undertake any repair of damaged homes and also ensure that Building Permits are obtained for all work. After the occurrence of any natural disaster, we anticipate that unlicensed contractors may attempt to perform work in our area which may result in improvements to your house or business that do not meet Florida Building Code standards.

Please note that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stipulates that any repairs or improvements that exceed 50% of the appraised value of the home, and the home is located within a mapped Flood Zone A or AE, are required to meet all construction standards for building in a floodplain. These standards include, but are not limited to requiring the lowest Finished Floor Elevation (FFE) is at least 1-foot above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE). The FEMA Map Service Center allows you to search for your address in order to assist with determining whether or not your property resides in a flood zone.
